Abdominal fat ‘better than BMI’ as measure of type 2 diabetes risk

Men who measure more than 102cm around the middle – and not below the belly – are five times more likely to be diagnosed with type 2 diabetes than men with a smaller waist, while women who measure more than 88cm are three times more likely to be diagnosed than others. [s]The Guardian[/s] reports that according to advice from Public Health England, which warned that abdominal fat is a better indication of the risk of type 2 diabetes than BMI (body mass index), which is a ratio of weight to height. In an advisory report to local authorities, Public Health England states categorically for the first time that excess weight is the biggest risk factor for type 2 diabetes. Some 90% of people with the disease are overweight.
