Competition inquiry warning

The inquiry was established by the Competition Commission to investigate whether there are any factors that prohibit or distort competition in the sector. Econex senior economist Mariné Erasmus says profitability is not the main cause of the problems in the private health sector. ‘I am of the opinion that regulatory omissions and oversight, as well as some perverse incentives, are at the root of the problems and the associated increasing costs or expenditure.’
