Draft regulations for managing healthcare waste gazetted

Two sets of draft regulations on managing the risks associated with healthcare waste were gazetted last week for comment within 30 days, reports Legalbrief Policy Watch.

Once in force, one set will prescribe minimum national norms and standards to be met when "validating the efficacy and operation of non-combustion treatment technology". To that end, they focus on testing procedures, record keeping and managing systems failures.

The other set of proposals has broader implications for healthcare waste generators, transporters and managers as these relate to third party protection. The maximum penalty envisaged for non-compliance is 15 years’ imprisonment and an "appropriate fine".
