Gauteng Emergency Services workers have warned of a total shutdown next month if Premier David Makhura and Health MEC Gwen Ramokgopa do not respond to their grievances. An Eyewitness News report quotes employees as saying that they are working very long hours but are not being paid fairly for this.
Workers say they are made to work 192 hours per month when the law says people should work 160. They say this would not be a problem if they were paid for the other 32 hours.
Shadrack Bobi is a paramedic in Sedibeng and he says that none of them will work on 20 September if Makhura or Ramokgopa don’t revert back to them. “If we don’t get anything on 20th or 21st, it’s going to be a total shutdown.”
Bobi says Makhura and Ramokgopa will be responsible for any casualties that will happen on that day as a result of their demonstration. “If the MEC or the office of the Premier don’t answer us, they are responsible. They will see who will serve those people.”
The report says the workers also want their colleagues who were dismissed in 2014 for working normal hours to be given their jobs back.
