High fat diet sharply increases breast cancer risk

Following a high fat diet like Atkins or LCHF increases the risk of the most common form of breast cancer by more than a fifth, [s]The Independent[/s] reports that the Epic Breast Cancer Study has found. Increasing saturated fat in food and consuming fatty products has even a bigger imapct, rasing the risk of hormone-sensitive breast cancer by 28%. Fatty diets also made it more likely for a woman to develop breast cancer marked by a defective HER2 gene. The findings from the study led by Dr Sabina Sieri from the National Tumour Institute in Milan, are reported in the [s]Journal of the National Cancer Institute[/s]. High fat diets have previously been under fire for cancer risks as they often see carbohydrates replaced with high-fat animal proteins.

‘This research is impressive because it recognises that breast cancer is not a single disease, and previous studies (of saturated fat) have overlooked that,’ said Dr Kim Hirshfield, medical oncologist at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. But, said Hirshfield, further studies were needed to determine the amount of saturated fat women could safely consume. ‘For optimal breast health, and for overall health benefits in general, it is recommended that women consume saturated-fat calories closer to the lower end of the spectrum in the study, which is around 15g a day,’ Hirshfield said.
