North West hospital’s first heart operation

Organisation: Position: Deadline Date: Location:

The Ferncrest Hospital in Tlhabane in the North West has successfully performed the first heart operation in the province, on 46-year-old Sarel De Deer, reports SABC News.

The operation was performed at a state-of-the-art theatre, jointly built by Netcare and the provincial health department. The North West Health MEC, Dr Magome Masike, says the successful operation heralds a new era for healthcare services in the province.

The cardio-thoracic surgeon that operated on De Deer says he suffered from atrial myxoma which affected the heart valve functioning.

The report says the province’s public health sector is struggling to provide quality health-care – the challenges include lack of material and human resources, while private health-care has become more expensive and less accessible to the poor.

The report says 15 patients on the waiting list for surgery are set to benefit.

The province is currently referring patients to Gauteng but the partnership is expected to reduce the current backlog and save on referral costs.
