Researchers tackling baffling Central American kidney disease

A painful disease that affects the kidneys has killed at least 20,000 people across Central America over the past decade. But, reports [s]The New York Times[/s], the illness, often called [b]Chronic Kidney Disease[/b], is so poorly understood that it still does not have a universally agreed-upon name. Theories vary drastically, citing a combination of possible factors, including heat stress, chronic dehydration, toxic chemicals, painkillers, sugar consumption and even volcanic ash.
