SA bans export of goods that may be required to counter the pandemic

A ban has been placed on exporting a long list of goods required domestically as South Africa deals with the COVID-19 epidemic, reports Pam Saxby for Legalbrief Policy Watch. The list includes several disinfectants and human vaccines, as well as different types of face mask and breathing appliance.

Gazetted on Friday, the emergency measure amends regulations in place since 2012, is immediately effective and will remain so for the duration of the national state of disaster.

While provision is nevertheless made for future export permit applications, no information is provided on the circumstances in which such applications might be approved by implication – in the absence of a recommendation to the contrary.

This tends to suggest that the new arrangements could be in place for some time.
