Statins have no effect on kidney function – study

The cholesterol-lowering medications known as statins ‘have no effect – neither good nor bad – on kidney function,’ are the findings of Dr Richard Haynes, University of Oxford, quoted in a [s]Health24[/s] report. The study included over 6,000 patients with chronic kidney disease who didn’t yet need dialysis. The study confirmed, however, that the drugs are safe for people with kidney disease. And, the authors noted, the drug’s cholesterol-lowering properties help reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.

Taking statins could, meanwhile, give a false sense of security and that could lead to heart disease and other obesity-related illnesses, reports [s]Health-Canal[/s]. A new UCLA-led study suggests that people who took statins in the 2009–10 year were consuming more calories and fat than those who used statins 10 years earlier. There was no similar increase in caloric and fat intake among non–stain users during that decade, researchers said. ‘We believe that this is the first major study to show that people on statins eat more calories and fat than people on those medications did a decade earlier,’ said the study’s primary investigator, Dr Takehiro Sugiyama.
