Medical Protection is delighted to announce that its Ethics For All medical conference is returning on 10 October 2024.
Now in its 16th year, Ethics For All will be an unmissable event designed to help doctors navigate some of the most critical ethical challenges facing the profession in South Africa.
The conference is part of Medical Protection’s commitment to its members to provide education and risk management events for doctors, dentists and other healthcare professionals, to help them improve their knowledge and skills, thereby reducing the risk of litigation and complaints.
Free to attend for all Medical Protection members, this year’s conference will once again bring together local and international speakers from across the medico-legal sector.
This includes Gerhardt van der Merwe, chair at South African law firm MacRoberts Attorneys, who will deliver a presentation on the criminalisation of doctors after a number of high-profile cases in South Africa in recent years.
Medical Protection Society CEO Karen Miller will deliver the event’s opening address. Miller – MPS’ first female CEO – has spent a large part of her career in South Africa, including five years as CEO of ABSA General Insurance in this country.
A number of other Medical Protection experts will also address the conference.
Dr Volker Hitzeroth, medico-legal consultant, will speak about the greater need for compassion within the healthcare profession, drawing on the research and campaigning Medical Protection has recently undertaken in relation to mental well-being.
Medico-legal consultants Dr Blesset Nkambule and Dr Shivani Chirkut will present a series of cases with which Medical Protection has assisted in recent years, and detail the learning points from each one.
Dental Protection dental director Dr Raj Rattan will also deliver a talk looking at how the core ethical principles that have guided human behaviour for centuries remain highly relevant today, despite society undergoing so many technological advances.
The event will be chaired by Medical Protection’s Head of Medical Services – South Africa, Dr Graham Howarth.
Ethics For All will take place online between 7pm and 9.15pm, a time designed to allow as many Medical Protection members to attend as possible. All attendees will also earn two CPD points.
