Germany has detected its first case of the new mpox variant, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) for public health said on Tuesday, after a 33-year-old man was isolated for treatment.
Reuters reports that the case was detected in Cologne, with testing showing he had the clade 1b variant, linked to the global health emergency that originated in the Democratic Republic of Congo and which has spread like wildfire.
The patient is thought to have picked up the virus in an east African country.
The RKI said it was monitoring the situation closely.
In Norway, two patients were recently diagnosed with the clade 2 variety of the virus – a less severe form of mpox than the clade 1b strain.
