Why taking care of your feet matters

Podiatry is rarely a first-choice career, but – acting on the advice of her small-town GP – Nikita Sahadew turned down an offer to study medicine and chose a career in foot health instead. Today, she has a PhD in diabetes and is a strong advocate for preventative footcare which she says could prevent 80% of diabetes-related amputations. Sahadew chats to Yash Naidoo and Yak Lindy in the latest episode of Why Did I Become A Doctor about career as a podiatrist, from treating her first patient at Johannesburg General Hospital, who had a maggot-infested foot, to owning her own practice and sitting on the HPCSA's Professional Board for Physiotherapy, Podiatry and Biokinetics as its sole podiatry representative. Sahadew is also the founder of PodMed South Africa. MedicalBrief readers get early access to Sahadew’s interview and other stories about the personal journeys of healthcare professionals.
