Local insights from the Future Health Index 2020, based on the concerns and ambitions of younger healthcare professionals across 15 countries, including South Africa, will be presented by technology multinational Philips at a webinar, in collaboration with MedicalBrief, on Thursday, 12 November at 18.00.
This is the first global survey of its kind and among the panellists will be Dr Nokukhanya Khanyile, Vice President of Mental Matters and voted one of the 100 Most Influential South Africans; and Dr Shakira Choonara, research-advocacy specialist in public health and 2017 Woman of the Year in Health, South Africa. The webinar will be facilitated by MedicalBrief managing editor William Saunderson-Meyer.

The current generation of younger professionals will soon make up the majority of our local healthcare workforce. They have the responsibility – and the privilege – of delivering the changes that are needed to ensure healthcare systems are fit for purpose. Value-based care is, of course the ultimate aspiration of this, delivered through the Quadruple Aim of better health outcomes, improved patient and staff experience, and lower cost of care.
The challenge to transform healthcare lies on this group’s shoulders, but too often their views are not widely understood.
Join us as we unpack this generation's expectations around technology, training and job satisfaction, the reality of their experience as healthcare professionals, and the immediate and considered action we need to set in place to protect the future integrity of the healthcare system.
The conversation will be guided by the local insights from the Future Health Index 2020, based on responses for almost 3,000 younger healthcare professionals across 15 countries including Australia, Brazil, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa and the United States of America. This is the first global survey of its kind – focused on the next generation of healthcare professionals.

Dr Nokukhanya Khanyile
Dubbed the medical wonder woman by startupAFRICA, 28-year old Dr Nokukhanya Khanyile is the epitome of what hard work, commitment and passion can achieve. Having qualified as a medical doctor in 2015 after completing her Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at the University of Witwatersrand, Dr Khanyile has broken the mould of a stereotypical doctor.
Boasting a following of more than 100 000 on Instagram, Dr Khanyile uses social media to engage, educate and uplift her followers. She actively promotes physical and mental wellness in both her everyday regime and on her social media accounts which also covers beauty and lifestyle inserts. Avance Media honoured her work and influence on the youth when she was nominated as one of the 2019, 100 Most influential Young South Africans in the Science & Technology category. By process of national votes, Dr Khanyile was named the winner of her category and placed 7th in the overall ranking.
As a practicing doctor, a typical day involves seeing patients admitted to her unit and deciding on investigations to perform, medication to prescribe and various multidisciplinary team members to involve in their management.
She is also the Vice President of Mental Matters, an organisation that aims to destigmatise mental illness in society (especially among the youth) through seminars with prominent guest speakers.
Dr Khanyile also uses her medical knowledge to answer frequently asked questions on various radio shows and in the print media, so she’s informing people about their health in the comfort of their homes.
Dr Shakira Choonara
Dr Shakira Choonara is a rising global icon, bold activist and 2017 Woman of the Year in Health, SA. She is an established research-advocacy specialist in public health. Her most notable and influential role to date is to be appointed to the inaugural African Union Youth Advisory Council.
She has recently ventured into being an independent public health practitioner working on an impressive list of global health projects led by United Nations (UN) agencies, the World Health Organization, international and regional non-governmental organizations.
Dr Choonara is a recipient of a number of prestigious awards including being listed as the Africa Youth Awards 100 most influential Young Africans in 2018 and 2019, NRF Next Generation Female Researcher, Destiny Magazine’s Most Powerful Woman under 40 in SA, one of News24 100 Young Nelson Mandela’s for the future, a One Young World Ambassador and an Obama Africa leader.
Having attained her PhD (Public Health) at the age of 27 years, she also holds an Honours (Cum Laude) and a Masters in Demography from the University of the Witwatersrand, SA. She is widely known and published for her work in public health on the fronts of universal health coverage, youth advocacy, health governance, gender equality, HIV, disability and malaria prevention.
