Nigerian looters are targeting Covid-19 relief supplies

Looters are continuing to target state warehouses stocked with Covid-19 relief supplies across Nigeria. The authorities have denied allegations that they are hoarding the supplies in order to sell them.

A report on the News24 site notes that some of the food supplies have become inedible provoking outrage in a nation reeling from spiralling food prices and high unemployment. The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs says the distribution of the supplies is the responsibility of state governors and not the federal government.

The National Governors Forum, which represents the 36 states, said some of the looted stock was ‘a strategic reserve ahead of a projected second wave of Covid-19’.
