Slain patient's brother angry over lack of Durban hospital security

The brother of the Nigerian man murdered in a Durban hospital in an apparent hit has lashed out at the lack of security at the facility, reports The South African. Last week reports of an execution-style murder at the Clairwood Hospital in Mobeni rocked KwaZulu-Natal Health, who have been slammed over ineffective security. Two armed men are alleged to have forced their way into the facility to perpetrate the assassination of the foreign national hospitalised for treatment on gunshot wounds.

The report says this week the man’s brother spoke to the media expressing his grief and anger at the shooting. The 47-year-old patient had sustained a gunshot wound to the abdomen in December, and his brother questioned why South African authorities failed to provide additional security given the nature of his injuries.

The man’s brother, who has not been named, said that he suspected the murder was a hit and believed the gunmen were aided by hospital security or another insider.

The report says Public Servants Association provincial manager Mlungisi Ndlovu claims that the hospital staff, whom he spoke to in the wake of the incident, were traumatised and feared for their lives having been threatened by the alleged hitmen. Ndlovu agreed that government hospitals ought to be monitored by access-controlled security cameras and called for the introduction of provincial risk and security plans to prevent this from recurring. PSA have demanded mandatory counselling for all hospital staff on duty that evening and called for the suspension and investigation of on-site security services.
