Cape Town hospital converted to multi-million-rand apartments

A well-known Cape Town hospital will be converted into a luxury residential and hotel development, with apartments priced as high as R23.3m, reports BusinessTech.

The former Netcare Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital in Bree Street is to be redeveloped into Mama Shelter Residences Cape Town. The original hospital, also called City Park Hospital, was a prominent medical facility in the CBD for decades before Netcare relocated it to the Foreshore.

The building is being converted into a 127-room hotel and 62 branded residences, with the project expected to be completed towards the end of 2026.

Prices will start at R2.9m for a studio, while the most expensive unit, the three-bedroom Grand Mama Penthouse with views of Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean, comes in at R23.3m.
