Doctor accused of violence, domestic abuse, by wife

A Gauteng woman has accused her estranged anaesthesiologist husband of physical abuse and domestic violence, saying he has also violated protection orders and at one stage, held her hostage for two days last year.

On Monday, the domestic violence division of the Gauteng High Court (Pretoria) heard preliminary proceedings regarding the accusations against the doctor, who is affiliated with Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital and who was absent from the hearing, claiming work commitments.

The court has now postponed the matter until 21 and 22 November.

The legal battle extends beyond mere separation, as both parties have filed court orders against each other.

The Star reports that a restraining order has been issued against the doctor, prohibiting him from being within 100m of his wife and banning any communication, following claims that he violated earlier court orders and used others to threaten and intimidate her.

In a court order from the Tshwane Magistrate’s Court, it was also mandated that he pay R140 000 for property damages allegedly caused during a break-in that was reportedly arranged by individuals acting on his behalf.
