Durban private hospital nurses arrested following use of deceased COVID patient's bank card

Two Durban nurses have been arrested after the bank card of a deceased COVID-19 patient was used to make personal purchases, reports News24.

The men are from St Augustine's Hospital and an unnamed private hospital in Umhlanga respectively, police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said.

The complainant has a business partner who was admitted to St Augustine's. They have a joint business account and he noticed that his partner's card was being used while he lay in hospital and this continued even after his partner's death.

Thanks to video footage, the two men were arrested, while the card, the deceased's cellphone and purchased goods were recovered.

Mbele said the one nurse was a repeat offender, with arrests of theft and fraud, and has an outstanding arrest warrant. The other has also previously been arrested for fraud.
