Eastern Cape Health sued over cranial drip

Sisiwe Komani is suing Eastern Cape Health with a R4m claim that her son, Siphelele, was left with a hole in his head in February 2008 after being put on a drip inserted in a vein in his forehead, and later on the left side of his head, notes a Daily Dispatch report.

"Fluids from the intravenous drip infiltrated or extravasted into the tissue surrounding both drip sites causing infection," part of the particulars of the claim read. This allegedly caused injury to the surrounding tissue and bone which resulted in a hole in Siphelele's head. It is also alleged that because of the injuries, Siphelele now has a squinted and blind left eye which does not close fully, a bald patch on the left of his head, a lateral deviation of the mouth and a brain injury.

According to the report, the department admits the drip caused injury to the third, sixth, and seventh cranial nerves. Judge Igna Stretch is presiding.
