Eastern Cape medical supplies go up in smoke

The Eastern Cape Department of Health has warned of a possible shortage of medication in Ncora, outside Cofimvaba, after a fire in a nurses’ home over the weekend destroyed medicines, as well as personal belongings.

Provincial Health MEC Nomakhosazana Meth said the fire completely destroyed the three-room building, with a staff room, tea room and medicine storage, reports News24.

“Health workers’ uniforms, food, personal belongings, furniture, wallets and money were all destroyed.”

The medicines had arrived from the depot last week.

Among temporary measures, the department is considering procuring containers to accommodate the staff, store medicine and use as a tea lounge, the MEC added.
