The Eastern Cape provincial government has been forced to fast track the refurbishment of many rural hospitals to capacitate them to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic, reports City Press.
A decision by the EC government to refurbish existing dilapidated hospitals in deep rural areas in the region, rather than build field hospitals, mean a much-needed facelift will be given to health institutions that have been in a state of collapse for years, the report said.
And in just five months work has begun at some of the facilities while refurbishment at others is nearing completion
Some of the facilities undergoing refurbishment are the Nessie Knight Hospital in Qumbu, the Mount Ayliff Hospital, the Madzikane KaZulu Hospital (Mount Frere), Siphethu Hospital in Ntabankulu and Matatiele's Taylor Bequest Hospital.
