Health Ombud reports on probe into KZN doctors’ deaths

The findings of investigations into the deaths of several former medical staff from KwaZulu-Natal state hospitals were to be discussed this week at a presentation by the Health Ombud after complaints from Health Minister Aaron Motosoaledi and Dr Sibongiseni Dhlomo, former chairperson of the parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Health, reports The Citizen.

The deaths sparked national outrage and raised serious concerns about working conditions in the province’s public health sector.

Ombud Professor Taole Mokoena’s probe was prompted by widespread public concern and extensive media reports of the deaths, the most high-profile cases being that of Dr Alulutho Mazwi (25), a medical intern at Prince Mshiyeni Memorial Hospital.

The incident resulted in the precautionary suspension of a supervisor while investigations were conducted.

The province was further rocked by the deaths of Dr Siyabonga Zulu of Ngwelezane Hospital, radiographer Mvelo Cele of Port Shepstone Hospital and Dr Tumelo Kgaladi of Addington Hospital, all within a short period.

The deaths sparked widespread condemnation from unions and professional bodies, which blamed chronic staff shortages, excessive workloads, burnout and hostile working environments at some of the facilities.

KwaZulu-Natal Health subsequently launched internal investigations, while Minister Motsoaledi demanded a broader, independent inquiry by the Ombud into the circumstances surrounding the fatalities.

This week’s briefing is expected to provide more information on the factors that may have contributed to the deaths and whether hospital management practices, workplace culture or systemic shortcomings played a role.

The Health Ombud was also expected to outline recommendations aimed at strengthening staff welfare, improving accountability and preventing similar tragedies in the future.
