How a finely-crafted shoe steered Hussein Seedat back to the dentist's chair

In his third year at Wits, Dr Hussein Seedat says a lecturer told him he wasn't meant to be a dentist. By then he had already been before the exclusions committee twice. This time he wasn't excluded, just told to quit. So he packed his car, drove home to Durban and spent December in front of the television, with a plan B lined up to study medicine in Santo Domingo. Instead, he went back. "To hell with what she said," he tells us. “I'll go back and I'll make it work." From there it was a gradual build from a spell in a small town in Mpumalanga, and a medical healthcare centre on the Bluff in Durban to his path towards endodontics. Catch Seedat's story in the latest episode of Why did I Become a Doctor, in partnership with MedicalBrief as he talks about almost giving up on dentistry to venture into the world of shoe sales, and how his uncle's enthusiasm for a finely-crafted pair of shoes steered him back into dentistry. MedicalBrief readers get early access to the podcast and other inspiring stories of healthcare professionals.
