The well-known KwaZulu-Natal Daymed Private Hospital and its owner, Dr Navind Dayanand, have been charged with numerous instances of tax evasion and credit fraud, the offences ranging from as far back as 2012 up until 2020.
Four others, including Dayanand’s wife, Nerupa, who was the hospital’s financial manager, a bookkeeper, and two tax practitioners were also charged with offences, reports City Press.
“The company is charged with company income tax fraud, VAT fraud and pay as you earn (PAYE) credit fraud, with an actual prejudice of R37m to SARS and potential prejudice of R498m for PAYE,” said National Prosecuting Authority KZN regional spokesperson Natasha Kara.
She added that Dayanand was charged with personal income tax fraud and VAT fraud to the tune of R142m, while the PAYE credit fraud was worth R637m.
Douglas Mpofu and Carla Louden are the accused tax practitioners, while Yagasami Perumal is the accused bookkeeper.
All five were due to appear in the Pietermaritzburg Commercial Crime Court on Tuesday, but only two appeared. The Dayanands – through their lawyer – provided a sick note, while Louden also submitted a sick note.
“Warrants of arrest were issued and stayed till the court date. The matter was adjourned to February 24 next year for statements and for all the accused to appear in court,” added Kara.
