Lights back on at Johannesburg hospitals after two-day outage

Electricity was restored to the Charlotte Maxeke Hospital on Tuesday, two days after a power failure at a CBD substation that provides power to numerous areas as well as several medical facilities.

Staff at the hospital told News24 patient care had been hindered since the outage on Sunday morning, which was caused by a burnt feeder board.

DA health spokesperson in the province Jack Bloom said the outage was distressing because even those hospitals which had generators would be unable to function properly. And the generators were not designed to run for so long, he added, which would affect treatment backlog.

Among other health facilities affected, were the Nelson Mandela Children's Hospital, Parklane Hospital, Brenthurst Clinic and Rand Clinic.
