Limpopo Health MEC authorities have called for an urgent investigation after a man appeared in the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court this week in connection with the rapes of two nurses at the Ga-Chuene Clinic as well as robbery and possession of stolen property, including a gun.
Premier Phophi Ramathuba, who said preliminary investigations found he was linked to more than 10 serious cases, added that the attack on the two nurses was also a direct assault on healthcare services in the province, and questioned the performance of security staff, noting that three guards were overpowered during the attack.
“You can’t have three guards being overpowered by one person. Yes, we understand he was carrying a gun, but … he took the two female nurses and left our female security guard, who was not handcuffed like the other males. She had the opportunity to call the police, the matron, or the HOT (Health Operations Team), but she did not.”
The Premier has demanded an investigation.
“We had three guards and none could overpower him. Why did this happen? Were they asleep when he arrived?”
She said psychological support continues to be provided to the nurses and the clinic remains closed.
