Medical scheme fraud

Discovery Health has sounded the alarm about fraud in the medical schemes industry, which it estimates to cost SA between R8.22bn and R43.2bn, based on international studies. The fraud comes in many different guises, ranging from ‘card farming’ – in which people allowed others to be treated on their card – top buying merchandise such as nappies or perfume from a pharmacy and submitting a health claim to cover the cost.
