MPs disapproving of R351m spent in a year to investigate DoH corruption

At least R351m of taxpayers’ money was spent in a single year to investigate corruption within the national Department of Health, to the disapproval of some MPs, reports  Die Burger. The amount includes the Digital Vibes investigation, that led to resignation of former Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize.

The Financial and Fiscal Committee (FFC) gave feedback to the National Assembly's Health Committee about the 2020-21 financial year. Several MPs reportedly frowned at the corruption investigation costs and FFC commissioner Elzabe Rockman described the figure as “concerning”.

During the Q&A session, FFC research director Chen Tseng said the money could have been spent on much needed services. However, added Tseng, it showed that the department was going through a cleaning up phase.

“This will take time as the issues are so deeply rooted that they cannot be dealt with in one financial year,” Tseng said.
