A male nurse from Ekurhuleni has been denied bail after being accused of raping a 17-year-old patient and sexually assaulting a 19-year-old man.
He told Nigel Magistrate’s Court last week that he was in a relationship with the 17-year-old, and in love wih him, but asked for bail, saying he needed to work to support his child, said National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana.
The state opposed the bail application, with prosecutor Tumelo Madisha arguing that the nurse took advantage of the boy’s vulnerable condition due to his inability to pay for continuing medical care, and was also a flight risk.
The case was postponed to 31 March 2025 for further investigations, reports The Citizen.
The nurse had been employed at a Netcare hospital in Springs in August 2023 when the 17-year-old was admitted for a medical procedure, during which time the nurse allegedly made advances towards him.
After his discharge, when his medical aid was depleted, the teen was promised that the nurse would continue caring for him and deliver medication to his home until he fully recovered.
“But during these visits, he would take the boy in his car and drive him to a nearby veld, where he would sexually assault him,” Mahanjana said.
“On two occasions, he allegedly raped the boy.”
Locals from the community called the police after apparently discovering the pair.
At the police station, the boy reported what was happening, and while they were there, another boy came forward and reported that he, too, had been sexually assaulted by the nurse.
