A patient and her family are receiving psycho-social support after a doctor, who has since been suspended, allegedly raped her in a locked consultation room at Mount Ayliff Hospital last week.
News24 reports that the hospital suspended the man immediately due to the seriousness of the allegations.
Eastern Cape Health MEC Nomakhosazana Meth said it was particularly concerning that the incident had happened on hospital premises and during the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children.
Eastern Cape police have, meanwhile, appealed to the public for help in tracing the healthcare worker, who has disappeared. Police spokesperson Brigadier Thembinkosi Kinana said police tracing teams were combing the Mount Ayliff area for him.
