Patients, staff, traumatised after hospital robbery

Police will be patrolling Carolina Provincial Hospital in Mpumalanga every hour, especially on weekends, after a gang of armed men stormed into the casualty department on Monday morning, vandalising medical equipment and furniture and terrifying staff and patients.

According to the Mpumalanga Department of Health, the incident happened in the early hours of the morning, reports News24.

Health MEC Sasekani Manzini said although personal belongings and money were stolen, no one was physically harmed during the attack, but the department had met police, labour unions, ward councillors and hospital management, and agreement was reached to start conducting visible patrolling at the establishment, especially on weekends

“Counselling will be provided to the affected staff and patients, including the security officers who were on duty. We will also be installing security gates to the nurses’ duty room,” she said.
