Western Cape police are intensifying their search for seven men who hijacked an ambulance and raped one of the emergency medical services (EMS) staff in Khayelitsha last Friday.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swarbooi said a 25-year-old complainant and her colleague, who had been deployed via a local ambulance service at a medical facility, had been ambushed by the gang who then fled with the vehicle.
He told News24 that the ambulance was recovered in the area later that evening but that the suspects are yet to be arrested.
Western Cape Health Department spokesperson Nadia Ferreira confirmed one of their HealthNET vehicles had been hijacked, and that the injured paramedic, who had been taken to hospital, was severely traumatised.
Police said they are investigating a carjacking, kidnapping and rape case.
