Ramaphosa urges global investment in women and children

World leaders must challenge the disregard many communities and countries have for the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women, President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged, saying investment in women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health would yield social and economic benefits for future generations.

Addressing the UN General Assembly this week as chair of the Global Leaders Network on this issue, Ramaphosa said international donor financing for health was declining in many regions, and hugely fragmented, reports TimesLIVE.

Almost 800 women die daily from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth, with 95% of the deaths being in low and middle income countries. Health inequalities had been emphasised by Covid-19, with more than 10m children having lost a parent or caregiver to the virus, while 67m missed out on routine vaccines and 80% lost learning time because of school closures.

“The long-term effects of underdeveloped children on our economies will be devastating,” he said, adding that the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in New York was an opportunity to take stock.

“The Global Leaders Network is a chance for heads of state and government and other leaders to work together to champion the women, children and adolescent health agenda.”

Heads of state could use their convening power to mobilise peers and advance policies, programmes and financing initiatives for improved outcomes.

“We need to challenge the disregard for the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women, and ensure these issues are openly discussed and addressed,” he said.

The inequality was “catastrophic for economies, political stability, health security and human rights”, and the Global Leaders Network would advocate for sustained and enhanced financial investments, contributing to the growth of nations and enabling individuals to reach their highest potential.

“We will also advocate for improved alignment of global financing mechanisms to foster better investment in strategic priorities to meet the needs of women, children and adolescents. Close monitoring and accountability across national, regional and global platforms is essential.”
