Suspension of top CMS official explained

The Council for Medical Schemes (CMS) has tried to allay fears about its internal processes following the suspension of a top official for alleged corruption. This is according to a Beeld report, which said acting registrar Sipho Kabane has issued a statement giving more details of the case against Stephen Mmatli, suspended head of the unit for compliance and investigations.

The CMS says it received an anonymous tip-off that Mmatli had a “corrupt relationship” with some entities regulated by the CMS and that it was alleged he “deliberately misled the council to rule in those organisations’ favour” in exchange for financial compensation.

Kabane says he is confident that the CMS’ internal procedures are able to deal with corruption. Avril Jacobs has been appointed as acting head of the unit.

Hope Chaane, Mmatli’s attorney, says in the report that they are heading to the CCMA to challenge his suspension, adding: “We cannot respond to the allegations as we do not know what they are.”
