Three more charges for former officer in Cape hospital shootings

A former Vredenburg police officer charged with murdering a fellow officer and two patients at New Somerset Hospital in Cape Town this year will face three more charges: attempted murder of a police officer in Hopefield and two counts of attempted robbery.

Jean-Paul Malgas made a virtual appearance in the Cape Town Magistrate's Court via video link on Friday, where he was supposed to be served with an indictment and summary of facts before having his case transferred to the Western Cape High Court.

However, the prosecutor, Advocate Adnaan Gelderbloem, told the court three new charges were being added: Malgas will now appear in the Vredenburg Magistrate's Court on the new charges next week.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila said those charges would then be added to the indictment and the matter would be transferred at his next court appearance on 10 November, reports News24.

Malgas was initially charged with three counts of murder, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition and robbery – he did not apply for bail.

The 39-year-old is accused of disarming and shooting Constable Donay Phillips in the head at New Somerset Hospital in May, and then shooting patients, who died at the scene.

During a previous appearance after his arrest, Malgas told the court he suffered from depression and was suicidal.
