Thrown in the deep-end in the midst of the Covid pandemic

Daniel Kapelus started his Masters degree in Vaccinology at Wits University in January 2020; the same year a new virus would cause upheaval in the world, throwing the scientific community into overdrive in the race to find a vaccine to stop the rising deaths. It was also a period that brought vaccine scepticism to new heights, fuelling conspiracy theories and misconceptions, and casting doubt on the rapidly-developed Covid vaccines. It could not have been a better – and more challenging – time for a young vaccinology student. Kapelus was thrust onto the frontlines of research for Covid vaccines, with real-world exposure to clinical trials, live data and lab research. In the latest episode on the Why Did I Become A Doctor podcast series, listen to Kapelus talk about his passion for vaccinology, which started when he switched from  engineering studies to the sciences to pursue his dream. MedicalBrief readers have early access to Kapelus’ interview by clicking on this link.
