Malaria has claimed the lives of two people in Limpopo, with 1 423 cases being reported over the past two weeks, according to the provincial Health Department.
It has attributed the surge to the weather conditions, which “are favourable” for mosquito breeding, and Easter holiday travel, which saw people travelling to the malaria endemic areas in the region, reports TimesLIVE.
“The surge is reported mainly in the malaria epidemic-prone areas of Vhembe (northern & eastern lowveld areas) and the eastern part of the Mopani region,” the department added.
To minimise the spread, an indoor residual spraying campaign has been launched, with so far more than 1m households having been sprayed.
