UK doctor struck off after leaving unsecured records in flat

A British doctor, who was already suspended when she left abortion papers, psychiatric reports and other confidential patient records at her rented flat after she moved out, has now been struck off the medical register.

Dr Maryam Mohamed Al Qureshi, previously known as Dr Victoria Pickles when she qualified from Leeds University in 2006 but who changed her name in 2018, was previously suspended after a 2022 Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service found her guilty of failing to provide good clinical care by not calling an ambulance when a patient called the NHS 111 hotline.

In the latest case, she had left records of 300 patients in an unlocked cupboard at her home in Southampton, the tribunal heard. The 2 000 pages, spanning 17 years, included information about abortions, overdoses and of psychiatric treatment, as well as patients’ names, addresses, and birth dates.

The General Medical Council (GMC), which brought the case, said the case was “particularly serious”, given the sensitive nature of the records.

An estate agent found the documents in a cupboard under the stairs when the doctor moved out in October 2022, reports the BBC.

The records, dating from 1996 to 2013, came from the Marie Stopes abortion service (now MSI Choices) and seven other healthcare providers in Hampshire and Leeds.

The doctor had displayed a “flagrant disregard” for security and did not explain her actions, the GMC said.

Striking her off, the MPTS ruled the doctor had “shown no effective engagement and provided no evidence that she is fit to return to practice”.
