Family and friends are mourning the loss of Durban dentist Dr Ncumisa Mdlokolo (32) who was hit and killed in Cape Town a week ago by a Ferrari, allegedly driven by a drunk driver, while another pedestrian was seriously injured.
Mdlokolo was visiting her sister, Anelisa, at the time, and the two were walking down a street when the car veered into the pedestrian behind them before hitting Mdlokolo.
The driver was arrested and later granted bail.
Cape Town Central police spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk confirmed a case of culpable homicide was under investigation. He said a 36-year-old man had appeared in court on 3 February, where the case was remanded to 7 May.
National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila told News24 the driver was also facing an additional charge of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Mdlokolo, a University of the Western Cape graduate, had recently celebrated paying off her tuition debt five years after completing her studies.
Beyond her medical career, she was an activist and founder of BlaQ Queer Films, a production company dedicated to telling the stories of transgender and queer lives in South Africa.
