The Eastern Cape Department of Health has reported 13 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) cases in the Buffalo City metropolitan municipality, in four day-care centres and primary schools.
Provincial Health spokesperson Siyanda Manana said the most common symptoms were coughing, sores in the mouth and on the feet, and blisters on the hands and feet.
He said they had not yet heard of similar cases in other parts of the province, and urged parents to adhere to basic hygienic practices, reports News24.
“The department’s outbreak response team has provided health educational sessions at the schools, and recommended that pupils confirmed cases must stay at home until they are no longer infectious,” he said.
