The case involving Stellenbosch radiologist Dr Pieter Henning, accused of firing his gun into the door of a vacant building last year while allegedly intoxicated, was postponed on Monday until 9 July while investigations continue, News24 reports.
Henning, who is also accused of failing to properly secure a weapon, is currently under also investigation by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) over claims of opioid abuse and of causing a patient’s death.
Once a familiar face on local TV after a string of appearances, Henning had previously denied to News24 that he had been drunk on the night of the shooting, as alleged by the National Prosecuting Authority, although he had admitted to drinking that evening.
After allegedly firing at the door, he had claimed he was “trying to save his girlfriend from the hospital”.
Video footage sent to News24 showed the radiologist earlier that night at Helderberg Hospital where he apparently tried to visit a patient. The footage shows him slinging a rifle over his arm, while bystanders watch.
The security company that responded to the shooting at the business premises said they received a burglary signal and found the front door’s glass damaged. Henning was disarmed by officers, who also found that “several other rounds” had been fired in the vicinity.
Henning, a former medical officer in the SANDF and founder of Keystone Radiology – since rebranded RadDx Radiology – is also being probed by the HPCSA over claims of opioid abuse and allegedly causing the death of a patient.
He is accused of abusing pethidine, with a witness claiming he injected himself before treating patients.
More recently, an ICU nurse at Mooimed Private Hospital in Potchefstroom accused Henning of negligently performing a pleural drain procedure in July 2023, leading to catastrophic internal bleeding and a patient’s death.
Keystone previously had branches in George and Polokwane, which Henning has closed down since the scandals first erupted.
