Council hears patient’s overcharging claim

Durban anaesthetist Dr Rajend Maharaj, accused by patient Prath Ramtahal of overcharging him for an eye-operation in 2011, yesterday appeared before a hearing of the Health Professions Council, where he pleaded his innocence, reports [s]The Mercury[/s]. Testifying at the hearing, Ramtahal said he was in ‘severe’ pain when Maharaj gave him a form to sign for any ‘shortfall’ on the operation. Maharaj’s legal representative, Altus Janse van Rensburg, submitted copies of the consent form and the anaesthetic bill, signed by Ramtahal. He disputed Ramtahal’s testimony that his medical history had not been obtained.
