The Free State Health MEC has vowed to recover medical negligence payouts from the relevant personnel, telling the media that his department is staggering under civil claims. According to a Volksblad report, a claim of R648m has been dragging on since 2004. Dr Benny Malakoane raised that case as an example of challenges facing his department. According to Malakoane, he is aware of 116 civil claims lost by his department. In the past two financial years, the department has been sued 28 times. He said money being spent on legal fees and payouts negatively affects performance of his department.
