Three Johannesburg clinics were burgled within a week, according to News24, the intruders making off with computers containing patient information. On Saturday evening, the Shanty Clinic in Orlando West, Soweto, and Thulamntwana Clinic in Kanana Park, Orange Farm, were both targeted by the men who stole computers containing information on patients and medicine stock.
In both cases, the security guards were overpowered and tied up. At Thulamntwana, the guard was rescued by neighbours, while at Shanty the guard was untied by a colleague reporting for duty on Sunday.
A few days earlier, Bosmont Clinic was also burgled, the thieves stealing computers, scanners and other office equipment as well as vandalising the medication room.
Eunice Mgcina, mayoral committee member for health and social development in the City of Johannesburg, urged anyone with information to contact the police.
“These burglaries are really concerning – especially because there is a threat to our security personnel as well.” She urged communities to assist in safeguarding facilities like clinics.
