The Kimberley Magistrate’s Court denied bail this week to a bogus doctor who had been arrested and charged with raping a 17-year-old patient, and who turned out to be practising as a medical assistant and not a doctor.
He was accused of raping the girl on 15 August when she was at his surgery for a medical consultation, reports TimesLIVE.
The prosecution requested that another matter, in which the man is facing ao charge of sexual assault from 20 April this year, be joined with the rape case.
“The investigating officer provided the court with several reasons why he should be denied bail,” said Mojalefa Senokoatsane, National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson for the Northern Cape.
Senokoatsane said the court heard that the man was not registered with any medical council to operate as a medical practitioner, “and he did not have legal papers to work in SA, as he entered the country on a visitor’s permit, and was an illegal immigrant”.
The NPA opposed bail, given the seriousness of the charges, and investigations are continuing in both cases.
