Bulgarian woman's medical fraud

A Bulgarian woman given a suspended prison sentence for fraud for practising as a medical doctor without the required South African registration, has appeared in a Cape Town court, says an IoL report.
Emelia Smith was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment, suspended for five years, by the Kuils River District Court on 15 December.

However, she was re-arrested and appeared in the Blue Downs Magistrate's Court on 24 December and again this week.

According to the charge sheet she falsely informed authorities at a private clinic in Kuils River in March, that she was a registered medical practitioner and as such was able to examine patients and prescribe medication.
