Cuba to send 50 more doctors to SA

Dr Alex Carreras, head of the Cuban mission in South Africa has confirmed that Cuba is to intensify its health collaboration with South Africa with the imminent arrival of around 50 doctors, reports Plenglish.

Cuba already has least 195 health workers in eight of South Africa's nine provinces. "There is a long history of permanence of our doctors, above all in rural communities, where many of them have contributed to prevent health services from collapsing. They sometimes operate in hospitals with more than 250 beds but only three or four doctors, as three or four docs is what we usually have in a hospital ward in Cuba," said Carreras, who graduated in 1992 and has been leading the mission in South Africa since 2010.
