The launch of a first-of-its kind surgical robotics system at a Free State hospital has catapulted the province – and the country – into the forefront of medical innovation, said the surgeons.
The Versius Surgical Robotics System at Universitas Academic Hospital is a state-of-the-art tool for minimally invasive surgeries, writes Molefi Sompane for Health-e News, which will improve patient outcomes through fewer complications, shorter hospital stays and faster recoveries.
“The system integrates cutting-edge robotic technology that enables surgeons to perform procedures with enhanced precision, reduced risk, and quicker recovery. It is expected to revolutionise surgeries across multiple specialities,” said Professor Freddie Claassen, head of urology at Universitas Hospital and the University of the Free State.
“This will not only elevate the healthcare system but also position the country as a key player in the development of advanced medical technologies in the region.”
Claassen said surgeons would benefit from enhanced visual and tactile feedback during operations, enabling them to perform procedures more accurately and safely.
