Fraud case opened against North West Health's head of department

A case has been opened with the Hawks against the North West Health’s head of department, Dr Thabo Lekalakala with the legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Health and Social Development registering the case at the Mmabatho Police Station. According to a SABC News report, it is alleged that the Health Department had used antiretroviral (ARV) medication conditional grants to procure ambulances from the private sector.

The report says that over past few days the Hawks have been probing allegations of fraud and corruption in various departments and they have also raided the Office of the North West Premier.

Economic Freedom Fighters Betty Diale is quoted in the report as saying: “We have submitted a letter to the speaker indicating our intention to pass a motion of no confidence against the premier of the North West province.”

“We take it the centre is not holding in the province. We take it the premier has a lot of misconduct, we feel the premier must be put aside the premier must wait let’s have a proper acting premier in the meantime pending elections.”

The Speaker of the Legislature has confirmed receiving the EFF request.

According to the ANC’s chief whip in the North West, Raymond Elisha, the motion is unlikely to get any traction in the ruling party. But, the report says, the Democratic Alliance has welcomed the motion and has indicated it will support it.
