GP sentenced for SARS tax evasion

A Kimberley doctor has been found guilty of eight counts of failing to submit income tax returns and 42 counts of failing to submit his VAT invoices, defrauding the South African Revenue Services (SARS) of a substantial amount of money in the process.

The Kimberley Specialised Commercial Crimes Court heard that Fabian Royston Tun, who owns a medical practice, had failed to submit personal income tax returns from 2015 to 2022, despite receiving income amounting to more than R17m.

IOL reports that for failing to submit personal tax returns, Tun was sentenced to two years, wholly suspended for five years on condition that he is not convicted of the same offence during the suspension period.

For the failure to submit VAT returns, he was handed a fine of R1 000 or four months’ imprisonment per count.

Tun has since submitted all of his outstanding tax and VAT returns.

“However,” said the National Prosecuting Authority, “he now has a criminal record, and SARS will be able to determine his tax liabilities.”
